Scrum Values Starfish Retro

#1

I haven’t seen this before, it’s a modification to the starfish retro I came up with. It seems pretty simple so i’m not saying I am the first one to do this by any means but I hadn’t seen it before so I felt like sharing something I am doing.

Instructions:

  1. Replace the traditional starfish categories with the scrum values which are Courage, Commitment, Focus, Respect, and Openness.
  2. Review the scrum values with the team (I always keep them up in the team area.)
  3. Ask the team to identify things that happened during the sprint that met the scrum values and post it in the correlating section.
  4. Ask the team to identify things that happened that didn’t meet the scrum values or how we could improve at these values and post in the correlating section.
  5. Make sure to remind the team to not point fingers and that we fail and succeed as these values as a team.
  6. Record action items and make a plan.

Focus
Because we focus on only a few things at a time, we work well together and produce excellent work. We deliver valuable items sooner.
Courage
Because we work as a team, we feel supported and have more resources at our disposal. This gives us the courage to undertake greater challenges.
Openness
As we work together, we express how we’re doing, what’s in our way, and our concerns so they can be addressed.
Commitment
Because we have great control over our own destiny, we are more committed to success.
Respect
As we work together, sharing successes and failures, we come to respect each other and to help each other become worthy of respect.

Thanks for sharing @troy. This is a really good variation of the one with Keep Doing, Stop doing, Start doing, More of, Less of Sprint Retrospective. I will try this in our next retrospective.

Did you find anything that we need to watch out for in terms of being open-ended which might get a lot of data - like taking a lot of time etc.?

I love this idea. It fits perfectly into some plans I am having with an off site team, which needs to be empowered to take a more active role. While I am with them right now and conduct various sessions, the Scrum Values Starfish Retro might help us to understand where we’ve got and where they need more support.
I am thinking about giving it a try next week.

Quick update - we did not mange to test run the Scrum Values Starfish Retro last Friday as we felt like the teams needs more concrete action plans to gain more confidence.

I am pretty sure there will be a good opportunity soon to give it a try even though. I will keep you posted.
